Volkswagen Australia introduced its Arteon flagship this week, with the coupe-style liftback sedan offered in one grade, the 206TSI R-Line, from $65,490 before on-road costs.

The Arteon 206TSI R-Line features several Volkswagen firsts, including a head-up display, proactive occupant protection and emergency assist systems.

\n

Using the blind-spot monitoring sensors, proactive occupant protection monitors the position and speed of vehicles behind the Arteon at all times.

\n

If an imminent risk is detected, the hazard lights will activate to warn the other driver, while occupants are audibly warned, all windows plus the sunroof close and the front seatbelt tensioners become taut.

Meanwhile, emergency assist is engaged when adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are active, with the Arteon keeping itself within a lane if it does not receive driver feedback despite visual and audible warnings, ultimately changing lanes autonomously until it comes to a complete stop in the emergency lane.

These safety and driver assist technologies are in addition to auto emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, park assist and nine airbags.

Other standard equipment includes 19-inch 'Montevideo' alloy wheels, dynamic LED headlights, LED tail-lights with scrolling indicators, power folding side mirrors and tinted rear windows.

\n

Additionally, adaptive chassis control can be managed via five driving modes – 'Eco', 'Comfort', 'Normal', 'Sport' and 'Individual' – which also adjust steering, engine and transmission settings.

The Arteon provides 563L of boot capacity with the second row upright or 1557L with it stowed.

Inside, features extend to black Nappa leather upholstery, 12.3-inch 'Active Info' digital instrument cluster, 9.2-inch 'Discover Pro' touchscreen multimedia system with gesture control, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support, ambient lighting, massage and memory driver's seat functions, heated outer rear seats and keyless entry/start.

Options include a panoramic sunroof ($2500) and a 'Sound and Style' package ($2500), which includes a 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system and 20-inch 'Rosario' rims.

\n

The sole no-cost paint colour is 'Pure White', while the 'Pyrite Silver', 'Manganese Grey', 'Tumeric Yellow', 'Chilli Red' and 'Atlantic Blue' metallics, and 'Deep Black' pearl attract a $900 cost.

\n

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, the 206TSI R-Line produces 206kW of power from 5700rpm to 6500rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1800rpm and 5600rpm.

Paired exclusively to a seven-speed 'DSG' dual-wet-clutch automatic transmission, the Arteon puts power down via Volkswagen's '4Motion' all-wheel drive system.

This combination results in a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.6 seconds, while claiming 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres of fuel usage on the combined cycle test and emitting 170 grams per km of carbon dioxide.

Measuring in at 4862mm long, 1871mm wide and 1435mm tall with a 2837mm wheelbase, the Arteon provides 563L of boot capacity with the second row upright or 1557L with it stowed.

Based on the eighth-generation Passat, the 'MQB' platform-sharing Arteon arrives as the successor to the CC that was discontinued in late 2015 and is built in Emden, Germany.
